Gauteng govt promises continued service delivery beyond G20 Summit

The Gauteng government has assured the public it will maintain its service delivery momentum post the G20 summit.

The provincial government held a media briefing in Johannesburg on Tuesday, where the world event was declared a success.

It said there were no reported interruptions to water, electricity or sewerage systems.

In the days leading up to the G20 summit, Gauteng municipalities ramped up their service delivery obligations; daily street cleaning, potholes being fixed and dead streetlights being replaced.

Law enforcement authorities were also out in their numbers doing patrols.

This led to criticism in some quarters that this only happened because of the G20 summit; however, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said that’s not the case.

"We are told that we are putting a lipstick on a pig, purely because of G20, we want to commit that we are going to go beyond G20."

Lesufi said some of the operations, like increased police visibility, will require additional budget to sustain.
