As a vote of no confidence against him looms, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli says the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has been targeting him for a while.

The party has informed the Speaker of the KZN provincial legislature of its intention to table a motion of no confidence against Ntuli in the next sitting.

The party has cited financial mismanagement and a failing government of provincial unity as its reasons.

But Ntuli said that the coalition was intact and had made good strides in a period of a year.

Ntuli spoke to journalists on the sidelines of a cabinet community programme in KwaNdengezi, west of Durban.

Despite a possible vote of no confidence against Ntuli looming, he remains confident of his work.

He said that the MK Party had been against him since his appointment in June last year.

"What else can you expect from the MK Party, because right from the beginning they were saying this premier is not going to last three months. After three months, they said six months, and after a year, they are now bringing a vote of no confidence."

He said that the MK Party was playing politics, and the looming motion of no confidence undermines the administration.

"The people of KwaZulu-Natal are seeing change, government that is able to work closer with them and government that is stable - the investor confidence has improved in the province of KwaZulu-Natal and then you go for a motion of no confidence. That is very unfortunate for the people of KZN to have such leaders in our benches."

It's now up to Speaker Nontembeko Boyce to indicate whether the matter will be in the order paper or not.
