Political infighting continues to plague Floyd Shivambu’s Afrika Mayibuye Movement (AMM) as Robert Nwedo quits as the party’s deputy president, two months into the job.

His resignation comes a few weeks after Nolubabalo Mcinga was fired as the party’s second deputy president after a fall-out with Shivambu.

In his resignation letter, Nwedo said that he was stepping down to focus on his trade union, the Maanda Ashu Workers Union of South Africa (MAWUSA).

"I would like to appreciate and thank the learning and experience gained through my involvement in building Mayibuye. My focus is building an organisation that is loyal to the workers and poor citizens in general under the MAWUSA banner. I wish Mayibuye the best and wish the movement can be steered in the right direction for true total liberation and emancipation of the people."

MAWUSA represents thousands of Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers across the country.

His exit from the party represents a significant blow to Floyd Shivambu’s newly formed political party.

Nwedo has refused to comment on his abrupt exit, instead saying his reasons would be detailed at a media briefing next week.

The Afrika Mayibuye Movement is due to hold a fundraising gala dinner on Friday, where tickets to sit with the deputy president were selling for R1.5 million.
