A year after his arrest on fraud allegations, SAFA president Danny Jordaan remains firmly in his seat, insisting he’s the victim of a smear campaign.

He's accused of using SAFA money for his own benefit, but says the accusations come from aggrieved former SAFA members.

A recent Daily Maverick article, 'Danny Jordaan is a burden that Safa shouldn’t have to carry', suggests Jordaan should have stepped down to avoid becoming a liability for the association.

Sizwe Mbebe, editor at SoccerBeat, says Jordaan has very much positioned himself as being the face of SAFA.

"So, his actions have consequences. He's really wrapped himself around SAFA so much that it's difficult to separate the human being, the manager, from the position. He's centred everything around himself."

Mbebe adds that the scandal is negatively impacting SAFA.

He suggests that sponsors pulling out has nothing to do with teams' performances and everything to do with 'rama'.

"No sponsor wants to be associated with an organisation that's unstable and using monies that are meant for certain things and not being used for those."

So why does the executive at SAFA continue to back Jordaan, wonders MacIver?

It's in the SAFA executives' interest to continue backing Jordaan, says Mbebe.

"I mean, associating with Danny Jordaan. You know how it is in politics; you grease my hand, I'll grease yours. He's helping those who help him."
