KZN on high alert: Level 5 storm warning issued for severe thunderstorms, hail

Large parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) are now bracing for severe weather impact as the South African weather service warns of inclement conditions on Tuesday.

Level 4 and 5 warning alerts for severe thunderstorms are in place for the province.

This will be accompanied by damaging winds, hail, and mudslides.

The recent weather warning comes as parts of the province, particularly the north, are experiencing rainfall and thunderstorms.

Last week, the province was battered by heavy rains, resulting in flooding that claimed the life of an elderly woman, while two other people are still unaccounted for.

More than 100 homes were destroyed, with many people displaced.

Authorities have warned the inclement weather could cause similar damage.

“Multiple weather [events] are in effect across large parts of the province of KZN for today. As a result, MEC for COGTA Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi has placed disaster management teams on high alert. This is done with the aim of ensuring that these teams are able to swiftly respond to weather warnings,” said KZN Cooperative Governance spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila

Mzila said the warnings must be taken seriously.

“This poses a serious risk to human life. Residents are urged to exercise utmost caution. Disaster management teams will be closely monitoring these areas.”

Motorists have been warned to avoid non-essential travel.
