The Gauteng Provincial Government has launched its Festive Season Road Safety Campaign, urgently calling on all road users to take responsibility for their safety and that of others.

Speaking at the launch on Thursday, Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, emphasised the critical importance of pedestrian safety, responsible road behaviour, and intensified enforcement during the busy holiday travel period.

The campaign, under the banner "E Thoma Ka Wena! It Starts With You," serves as a direct call to action for every road user to make safer choices and prioritise safety on the road.

With 5.5 million registered vehicles in Gauteng, the province is experiencing a rapid rise in mobility, which consequently increases the risk of accidents and fatalities.

MEC Diale-Tlabela warned that the reality is that more vehicles and more movement mean a higher risk.

She issued a firm warning to lawbreakers:

"All law enforcement agencies are collaborating and working together, and we’ll make sure that people are safe. We will arrest you."

The campaign is particularly concerned about the alarming number of pedestrian fatalities, which account for over half of Gauteng's road deaths.
