Women are better drivers than men, implies data from Discovery Insure

The data is in! We know who the best drivers in South Africa are.

"Women are better drivers than men on average,” explains Precious Nduli of Discovery Insure.

Digging deeper, the data also reveals that women have more ‘phone events’, meaning they’re more likely to be distracted drivers. On the other hand, men exhibit more aggressive driving, with 43% more ‘speeding events’ and 43% more ‘harsh cornering events’.

According to Discovery Insure, Cape Town and the Western Cape have the best drivers, with the lowest speeding and the calmest behaviour. On the other hand, Durban shows more aggressive behaviour, with a higher number of ‘acceleration and speeding events’.

The data shows that the most popular routes in South Africa are the N3, which connects Johannesburg to Durban, and the route from Cape Town to Johannesburg. The N3 is also the most accident-prone route.

Discovery Insure also found that young people are the calmest drivers, despite having more accidents due to a lack of experience.

According to the insurer’s data, sleeping for the correct duration (between seven and nine hours) can lower your accident risk by up to 32%.
