The City of Cape Town has announced it is significantly increasing its mobile vehicle checkpoints this festive season to enhance road safety.

The Mayoral Committee Member (Mayco) for Safety and Security, JP Smith, stated that enforcement agencies will be rigorously inspecting standard vehicle safety features.

These checks will include tyre tread depth, whether brake lights work, and ensuring motorists have valid vehicle licences.

Smith emphasised the importance of roadworthiness, urging motorists to prepare their vehicles.

He also highlighted a proactive measure, noting that citizens can access voluntary safety checks at the Bellville and Joe Gqabi testing stations.

"Unfortunately, the festive season is notorious for a higher death toll, and we should all do what we can to make our roads safer," Smith said.

"Consider the impact of your actions, not just to those who are your passengers in your vehicle but also other road users."
