The African National Congress (ANC) said it is working around the clock to pay outstanding salaries as unpaid staff threaten to disrupt the party’s National General Council (NGC).

The NGC is set to kick off on Monday, where the ANC will meet to review the state of the organisation.

But preparations for the 5th gathering have exposed the party's persistent financial troubles as the ANC buckles under the weight of its wage bill and the cost of the massive event.

It’s not the first time the ANC has faced threats of a boycott over salaries.

ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula said the party has resorted to fundraising to help settle the staff bill.

“The component member of staff that is not paid is management, starting with me, Secretary General. All our staff below have been attended to in terms of salaries.”

While Mbalula admits the NGC is a costly exercise, he said everyone is pulling their weight to ensure a successful meeting.

“And given the party that we are, big as we are, we keep facing this particular challenge. And it is a challenge that the national executive committee have resolved that we need to sit down after the general council and resolve this matter once and for all.”
