One of the discussions being had at the NGC is the party’s precarious financial state, which has been marked by persistent late and sometimes non-payment of staff salaries.
The ANC’s treasurer general, Gwen Ramakgopa, has tabled the party’s financial report before the NGC.
The report was tabled behind closed doors and is considered confidential.
However, the ANC’s financial woes have been in the public eye, with the sheriff seizing some of its property over unpaid debt and its staffers consistently having to picket over the late or non-payment of salaries.
ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu said that the party is trying to find creative ways to generate more legitimate revenue streams.
“I always say that if the ANC was a corrupt party, not individuals, but the ANC as an organisation, if it was a corrupt party, we would not be poor. We would be tapping into the resources of the State as a governing party. We are focusing on building and strengthening our machinery, and we need resources to do so.”
Bhengu said despite the financial difficulties the ANC still manages to function effectively and carry out its mandates as a governing party.
