Cape Town’s Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) teams recently rescued a hiker who became unresponsive after taking a substance to “enhance” his outdoor experience.

The incident occurred in Cecilia Forest, where a fellow trail runner found him face down on the trail early Saturday morning.

Fortunately, paramedics reported that his condition was not medically severe.

David Nel, WSAR spokesperson, warned hikers against using drugs or alcohol while exploring natural areas.

Nel explains that rescuers spent significant time coaxing the individual down, highlighting how such incidents can strain emergency resources.

"This one was a little bit odd. I doubt very much that falling asleep on a hiking trail was what he intended when he made bad choices earlier in the day.

"The consumption of drugs or alcohol while hiking in these areas impairs everything from cognitive to physical ability; you're not able to as quickly or as easily identify hazards, and you're going to become a statistic. It's really not worth it; it's not worth it to start with, but just absolutely not in these areas."

The city has seen a surge in trail activity over the summer, making safety precautions more critical than ever.

WSAR urges hikers to remain sober, respect the environment, and contact emergency services if needed on 021 937 0300.
