With the holiday season upon us, many will be shopping for delicious festive goodies, which end up being quite costly.
If you’re looking for that special panettone from Italy, genuine Swiss choccies or melt-in-your-mouth shortbread biscuits from the UK, without busting your budget, then stores such as Score grocery discounter in Claremont have you covered.
Score is a grocery clearance store, and they can afford to offer items at affordable prices because of their dedication to preventing food waste.
This means they carefully check 'best before' dates against 'expiry dates' to give customers good value.
Founder Demetri Economopoulos says there's often a lot of confusion between the two.
"Expiry dates are on perishable things such as milk, meat, stuff you need to keep in the fridge, and stuff that, once opened, needs to be consumed."
A best-before date applies to a non-perishable item kept in a can or jar, or a plastic bottle, that is hermetically sealed
Economopoulos explains that he buys stock both locally and overseas.
"We're just trying to stop the waste; a lot of this goes into landfill."
He adds that the customer also benefits from the lower prices.
"The whole premise about the short-date discount stores is that you should be saving anywhere from 40% up to 50% or 60% on your item."
