What is usually a busy weekend shopping day became a high-energy spectacle of collective buying power as stokvel groups descended in their thousands, pushing towering trolleys stacked with bulk essentials for their annual year-end purchases.
The atmosphere at Makro Woodmead this past Saturday was less like a standard retail rush and more like a high-stakes annual economic harvest. As one of the retailer’s biggest stokvel days of the year, the store was transformed into a frenzied hive of activity, where mammoth trolleys, stacked high with provisions, became symbols of coordinated community savings and formidable purchasing power.
Christina Molobela, Makro Woodmead Food Manager, described the scale vividly.
"I think this is our biggest stokvel day today; you can see the whole team is here, running around... the ladies do bomb the shelves out."

THE ANATOMY OF A R200,000 PURCHASE
The statistics on stokvel spending underscore their immense contribution to the retail sector. Makro groups routinely execute transactions starting from a minimum of R24,000 and soaring to well over R200,000 for a single group.
Groups vary in size, from smaller, tight-knit units of 5–10 members to larger collectives of 24 or more, all consolidating their savings for one major year-end spend.
"We do get excited. I mean, you can see the whole team is here," Molobela noted, acknowledging that the stokvel rush, peaking in December and November, represents a vital annual windfall for the company.
Makro sees almost 10,000 distinct stokvel customers shopping in December alone, followed by nearly 5,000 in November, compared to a monthly average of 3,000 throughout the year.

THE SHIFT TO STRATEGIC, BULK BUYING
The groups' buying patterns are highly strategic, driven by the goal of maximising value and securing stability for the new year. Makro's combined retailer and wholesaler model, where customers can buy in cases rather than just single units, is the key differentiator that attracts these bulk buyers.
Given the current economic climate, the groups overwhelmingly focus on securing non-perishable food products. Molobela explained that these bulk purchases are intended to last families for the next three to six months, providing a crucial financial cushion well into the new year.
The Top 10 Most Bought Products list reflects this focus on household staples, demonstrating a deliberate, utilitarian approach to spending:
Koo baked beans in tomato sauce 400g
C&b mayonnaise 750g, regular
All gold tomato sauce 700ml
Lucky Star Pilchards Tomato 400g
Tastic rice 10kg
Sunlight dishwash liquid 750ml
Coca-cola soft drink 2L
M long-life milk 1lt, full cream
Selatibrown sugar 10kg
Brookes oros orange squash 5lt
And on Saturday, these exact provisions were seen stacked to capacity on towering, mammoth trolleys throughout the aisles, embodying the sheer scale of the stokvel collection.

STOKVEL ADVANTAGE: SAVINGS AND LOGISTICS
Stores have cemented partnerships with stokvels by offering a dedicated banking and logistics service designed to make the annual purchase seamless.
Safe and Secure Savings: Groups can bank their funds directly at the store throughout the year, with two or more treasurers required to sign off on the account.
Exclusive Benefits: Stokvels qualify for reasonable discounts over and above promotional prices on food items, maximising their savings.
Logistical Support: Groups can submit a product list, allowing the Makro night shift team to pre-pack and prepare the items for quick collection or delivery, bypassing the time-consuming shelf-picking process.
Furthermore, groups can opt to receive gift cards instead of groceries, allowing them to purchase non-food items like back-to-school stationery at their convenience, further extending the stokvel’s financial utility beyond the kitchen.
