Silent divorce, also known as a psychological divorce, refers to when couples live together but are emotionally disconnected, effectively separated.

They are simply coexisting, like roommates, with no real intimacy, communication, or a shared future.

Zwane explains that these couples may still go through the motions of marriage, but there is no genuine interest or affection between them.

“There can be practicalities of what it is going to take for us to dissolve this marriage, to go through the admin of going through assets. But the person may also not be at an emotional stage to consider starting over.”

He emphasises that the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference, which can be a sign of a deeper issue.

“In indifference, you have accepted the state of things, and there is no fight in you. Indifference is almost a way of protecting yourself from getting hurt, and there is no expectation and nothing to look forward to.”

He emphasises the importance of communication and intimacy in relations, highlighting that couples should regularly discuss their feelings, desires, and dreams with each other.

It is critical to address issues and work through challenges together.
