The South African National Parks (SANParks) has welcomed the 10-year sentence handed down to a Signal Hill robber.

The man was connected to several robberies targeting runners and visitors in the Signal Hill area of Table Mountain National Park.

SANParks said that due to a spike in robbery incidents in the first few months of 2025, they deployed targeted patrols across Signal Hill.

The convicted criminal was arrested after he robbed a visitor to the park on 14 September.

SANParks spokesperson JP Louw said the man was found carrying a dangerous weapon within the park and was detained.

He said: "SAPS detectives, working closely with the TMNP Operations Room and ranger teams, meticulously pieced together evidence connecting the suspect to additional cases. Evidence compiled through ranger observations and statements proved critical during court proceedings, helping to link the suspect to additional cases and secure a direct 10-year prison sentence."

Louw added that they were encouraged by a decline in robbery cases in the park.

"SANParks commends the professionalism and dedication of all ranger teams, the SAPS [South African Police Service] partners, stakeholders and community groups, whose commitment ensured this positive outcome."
