Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku is urging the freight industry to improve the safety standards of heavy motor vehicles on the province’s roads.

This follows 43 incidents, including collisions and overturned trucks, recorded since the beginning of December.

The Mobility Department says the trend is worrying, especially ahead of one of the busiest travel weekends of the festive season.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Every overturned truck is a preventable tragedy that endangers lives and hampers mobility. We urge the freight industry to take immediate action to improve safety standards and protect all road users,” Sileku said.
