Second-quarter crime statistics reveal that Cape Town remains at the epicentre of violent crime in the Western Cape.
The murder rate has increased by 15.3%, with a total of 1,160 murders recorded in the second quarter of 2025.
Police also recorded a total of 1,157 attempted murders.
Western Cape Deputy Commissioner Major General Preston Voskuil said that firearms are at the heart of violent crimes in the province.
The release of the latest crime statistics paints a grim picture of violent crime in the province.
Gains recorded in the first quarter were reversed in August, with murders increasing by 77 cases.
However, police said that they’ve confiscated 1,291 firearms across the province during the reporting period.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Preston Voskuil said authorities are seeing a rise in cases involving women, including elderly women found in possession of firearms.
In addition, more than 12,900 dangerous weapons were seized over the period in review.
