Rand Water has announced the successful completion of the first phase of its extensive infrastructure maintenance program, with the second stage scheduled to begin this Friday.

The utility has been conducting proactive maintenance across various systems in Gauteng since December 13. The project is designed to ensure the long-term reliability of the province’s water supply as infrastructure faces increasing pressure.

During the repair period, residents in affected areas may experience intermittent water supply or total outages. Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo explained that while these disruptions are temporary, they are necessary for the system’s longevity.

Maroo emphasised that this planned maintenance is a strategic move to accommodate the rapid population growth and the resulting surge in water requirements across the province.

"We are rebuilding the system. We are replacing what needs to be replaced so that in the new year, we are able to really supply water to different areas. And obviously, we know that there is a high demand. The population is growing, especially in Gauteng, said Maroo.
