Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero said cleaning up the city’s CBD remains top priority as the city doubles down on plans to address the decay.

Morero’s comments come amid renewed concerns about the poor state of the inner city, including high crime levels, following the death of media personality Warrick Stock.

Stock, better known as DJ Warras, was gunned down near Carlton Centre on Tuesday.

It’s understood that the 40-year-old had been at a previously hijacked building named Zambesi House, where he was privately contracted to manage the security.

Morero visited the Stock family home on Thursday, where he recommitted to implementing measures to address a range of challenges in the CBD.

“While it continues to be a concern of the city, it's part of our priorities to deal with law enforcement and crime prevention because crime continues to escalate. There's a lot of crime happening in the city, lawlessness... hence, we declared crime and crime prevention as one of our priorities in the city. That's exactly what we're trying to do to push back.”
