The Department of Transport has revealed that road fatalities recorded in the first half of December have decreased in the country compared to the same period last year.
Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy joined other transport and road safety officials in Somerset West on Friday to announce the mid-festive season preliminary road safety report.
Creecy said preliminary reports indicate a 20.8% reduction in road fatalities from 1 December to 16 December 2025.
She said the reduced figure is due to intensified law enforcement and road safety campaigns countrywide.
"So, last year, at this time, in the first 16 days, we had 545 fatalities, and this year we have 431 fatalities."
Creecy has, however, urged more caution on the roads, saying in the Western Cape alone, 66 people were killed in 55 crashes in the first half of December.
