The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening road safety beyond the festive season.
This follows the release of the midterm review of the 2025 festive season road safety statistics.
According to the figures released by transport minister Barbara Creecy on Friday, there has been a 20.8% decrease in fatalities on the roads since the start of December when compared to the same period last year.
SANTACO has welcomed the figures, saying they demonstrate that coordinated efforts from all sectors are beginning to have the desired impact.
SANTACO spokesperson Mmatshikhidi Phala says safety on the roads requires shared accountability from all road users.
“As the primary provider of public transport, the taxi industry recognises its responsibility in protecting commuters. Through the “Hlokomela” road safety campaign, SANTACO continues to emphasise vehicle roadworthiness, driver discipline, fatigue management and compliance with traffic regulations, while encouraging passengers to prioritise safe travel behaviour,”Phala said.
