The City of Cape Town is urging parents and guardians to register children on the Identikidz safety programme at all participating Cape Town beaches.

The programme kicked off last week and eleven children were safely reunited with their families after being temporarily separated.

The unique serial number on each Identikidz arm band links to the contact details of parents or guardians and helps authorities and lifeguards quickly reunite families.

"The sheer number of visitors can be overwhelming to smaller children and it's easy for them to get lost. This initiative is completely free and will be available at some of our busiest beaches,” said MMC for Community Services and Health Francine Higham.

“If your children are joining other families or friends, please also ask them to stop at the green container upon arrival and remember to give them your phone number before they leave home."
