The City of Cape Town said that there has been an increase in incidents of interpersonal violence and domestic disturbances reported across the metro.
Over the past week, the city’s Emergency Call Centre received more than 1,800 requests for assistance.
A total of 116 calls were logged for assault cases, 47 for domestic violence and 15 for self-harm - up from 10 the previous weekend.
The city’s MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said that there was also an increase in calls for assistance related to noise nuisances, rising from 255 the previous weekend to 281.
“These statistics and incidents are reminders of the pain and anguish that so many people experience year-round, but particularly during this period. Our staff are on hand to assist where they can, but not everyone reaches out for assistance - in fact, these statistics likely represent only a fraction of the true state of affairs.”
He has appealed to residents to continue reaching out for help.
“I appeal to persons in crisis to please reach out for help. I also appeal to friends, relatives and neighbours to check on those in your lives who you know are having a tough time. Your text, call or visit could make the difference during what is a very lonely time for many people.”
