The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities has called on young people across the country to refrain from alcohol and substance abuse during festive season celebrations.

The call comes amid concerns over increased levels of alcohol and substance abuse, which the department said are among the leading causes of road accidents, crime, family conflict and cases of gender-based violence (GBV).

The department said drug and alcohol abuse has far-reaching implications.

Department spokesperson Cassius Selala explained: “The national drug master plan recognises substance abuse as a major social and public health challenge that disproportionately affects young people and undermines social stability, economic participation and community safety. Alcohol and drug abuse fuel risky behaviour, violence and long-term dependency, placing an enormous burden on families, communities and the state.”
