As much of South Africa slows down for the festive season, many workers remain on duty, often battling burnout, low motivation and a sense of missing out.

Life coach and author Judy Klipin says December can be particularly difficult for those still working, as social expectations and visible holiday celebrations heighten feelings of exhaustion and comparison.

Klipin warns that working through the festive period does not eliminate the need for rest.

"I think that the issue with the festive season and this time of year is that there's an expectation that everybody goes on holiday at this time of year, and so that's what makes it hard for people who can't go on holiday, or maybe even who have chosen not to go on holiday.

"There's this groupthink that nobody works at this time of year, which can make it hard to be the only ones in the office.

"I think that it can feel like a punishment to be the only ones in your life who are working while everybody else isn't, but if we can change that mindset to be able to see it as not a punishment and to try and make the most of it, I think that that will help people to feel much better.

"There needs to be a balance of making sure that you are getting enough rest because it is true that everybody is tired at this time of year, and so you do need to prioritise resting your body and your mind while also creating some sense of enjoyment during this time. So, nice food to eat, seeing friends, going out for meals, but not to excess."

To stay motivated, Klipin encourages workers to find meaning in their roles and to create small moments of enjoyment at work, from flexible hours to shared meals and lighter routines.

She also urges employers to show compassion during the period, saying even small gestures can help staff feel valued and supported.
