Foldable phones are gaining popularity as more brands experiment with this format.

Huawei continues its competition with Samsung with the introduction of its foldable Huawei Mate X7, a direct competitor to the Z Fold.

Samsung also recently launched its Galaxy Z TriFold, in response to Huawei’s Mate XT, which debuted last year.

There are key differences in design and functionality, says Arthur Goldstuck, CEO of World Wide Worx

Huawei Mate XT offers more versatility, following single, double, and triple screen modes, whereas the Z Fold’s design relies on the screens folding over each other, limiting functionality.

“You don’t actually have to carry a tablet anymore because the phone becomes a tablet.”

He adds, “It does raise the issue of how you protect a phone. Huawei has come out with a pretty clever protector for it; so far, it seems to do the trick. Whereas Samsung relies on the screens to protect each other.”

In terms of price point, the Huawei Mate XT lands at around R60,000 while the Samsung Z TriFold is expected to cost upwards of R50,000.
