KwaZulu-Natal’s transport department has recorded more than 2,600 arrests for drunken driving since August this year.

Traffic officers across the province have been conducting roadblocks, with operations intensified over the festive season.

The campaign, known as “Nenzani la eZweni”, also focuses on enforcing provincial by-laws.

The department says 38 motorists were arrested in Margate on Friday, including a 74-year-old driver.

Of those arrested, nine were female and 29 were male.

In Newcastle, another 32 people were arrested, including a policeman, firefighter, paramedic, and two teachers.

Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says officers also arrested 32 motorists in Stanger, the oldest being 65 years old.

“The MEC has expressed deepest appreciation for the Ray Nkonyeni local municipality traffic department as well as the traffic officers from the KwaDukuza local municipality as well as SAPS; he has saluted the national traffic office for augmenting the #nenzanilaezweni operation.” He said.

Sibiya adds that the collaborative effort is yielding positive results.
