Tensions flared in Paulshof, north of Johannesburg, as residents of the Ginger Park informal settlement attempted to turn back law enforcement officers during an oversight visit.
Joburg Human Settlements MMC Mlungisi Mabaso led the team alongside Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers, responding to complaints about rising crime from residents and nearby businesses.
The settlement, made up of makeshift structures along Witkoppen Road, has an unconfirmed number of residents.
When officers attempted to enter, residents tried to block their access but failed to prevent the visit.
"What happens if we start protesting? Go ahead and attack. No but why are you here because we have been calling for this councillor and now you come here unannounced."
