Cops confirm over 6k arrests in a week nationwide

Police have arrested 6,692 suspects for various crimes in nation-wide operations within a week.
Of this figure, 1,603 people were arrested for drunken driving between the 22nd and 28th December.
Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk said 165 suspects were arrested for murder, while 104 were nabbed for illegal possession of firearms during the same period.
"As part of the ongoing safer festive season operation, running concurrently with Operation Shanela II, the SAPS [South African Police Service] has placed particular focus on alcohol related offences. In just one week, 1,603 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, while 963 suspects were arrested for illegal liquor trade."
Van Wyk said over 600,000 litres of alcohol has also been confiscated across several provinces.
