South African National Parks (SANParks) has warned extreme sports enthusiasts that base jumping is illegal and strictly prohibited at Table Mountain national park.
American base jumper Brendan Weinstein crashed to his death on table mountain's Platteklip gorge on Monday.
SANParks spokesperson JP Louw extended condolences to Weinstein's loved ones with a warning to fellow base jumpers.
"SANParks extends its heartfelt condolences to the family as well as the friends of the deceased. We also reiterate that base jumping is an illegal, unregulated activity which is strictly prohibited within Table Mountain national park," said Louw.
Louw says members of the public should report any base-jumping activities directly to SANParks or rangers on duty.
"We appeal to all visitors to refrain from undertaking such activities. The park is a protected area in terms of the national environmental management: protected areas act (act 57 of 2003) and forms part of a UNESCO world heritage site, where activities that pose risks to human life and the environment are not permitted," said Louw.
Western cape police have indicated the incident is being investigated.
