The Department of Basic Education says that it aims to place all unallocated learners in schools within the first 10 days of the term.

The Western Cape Education Department announced that around 7,200 learners still require placement.

The department says the semigration of more than 13,000 learners from the Eastern Cape, along with 10,000 late applications received since November 1, has placed the system under pressure.

The department's acting spokesperson, Terence Kala, said they are moving swiftly to address placement challenges.

"We do know that provinces like Gauteng have brought in additional capacity over the holidays to ensure that they can accommodate all learners who need space. What is important for parents to note is that the department will endeavour to ensure that every child is placed timeously."
