Limpopo and Mpumalanga are still dealing with flooding and infrastructure damage from heavy rain over the provinces.

Meteorologist and Weather Forecaster at the South African Weather Service (SAWS), Lehlohonolo Thobela explains the reason for such conditions.

"It is a low pressure system... it's called a tropical low... it's transporting a lot of moisture into the north-eastern parts of the country and that is why we're receiving a lot of rain. This weather system is lasting over that area for a longer time, and it's slow-moving."

Thobela says there's a 80% to 100% chance of more rain over the next 24 to 48 hours in the Mpumalanga lowveld, affecting municipalities like Maruleng, Nkomazi, Mbombela, Bushbuckridge and more.

While he says weather like this is to be expected at this time of the year, the large amount of rainfall has been unusual.

"The area itself has received almost close to half of what it receives in a year... especially in the past three days."
