Family, friends, and colleagues of the late Cheryl Sisoka will gather in Lamontville, south of Durban, on Sunday to bid a final farewell to the Deputy Coordinator of the ANC’s largest region, eThekwini.
Sisoka, who was also a KwaZulu-Natal councillor, passed away at her home in Durban last week. Her death came just days after she was last seen in public at the party’s 114th anniversary celebrations at Durban City Hall—an event she played a key role in organising.
Described by peers as a loyal servant dedicated to her work, Sisoka’s leadership was pivotal during a period of transition for the party. When ANC structures, including various regions, were disbanded last year, she was appointed as an interim leader. Prior to her passing, she was widely tipped for a senior position at the upcoming regional conference.

During a memorial service held last week, ANC KZN Provincial Coordinator Mike Mabuyakhulu praised her unwavering commitment to the movement.
“Comrade Cheryl is one of those very brave heroines of our struggle; a brave woman, a dedicated leader, and a leader of great integrity and skill,” said Mabuyakhulu.
Colleagues within the eThekwini Council have echoed these sentiments, remembering her as a skilled and principled politician. Sisoka’s funeral service today marks the conclusion of a week of mourning for the regional heavyweight.
