Gun violence has claimed multiple lives across the Western Cape over the weekend, leaving communities reeling from a series of brutal attacks.
Police are currently investigating the mass murder of eight people in the Marikana informal settlement in Philippi East. Three others were injured in the assault, which is believed to be linked to extortion syndicates operating in the area.
Reports indicate that six victims were killed instantly at the scene. One victim passed away while being transported to a medical facility, and the eighth victim died later in the hospital.
Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut confirmed that the attackers are still at large.
"The suspects fled the scene, and they are yet to be arrested. Any person with information is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or to use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously," Traut stated.
In a separate incident on Friday, a 15-year-old boy was shot dead in Seawinds, Muizenberg. Police confirmed the teenager sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the back of his head.
Ward 45 Councillor Mandy Marr has made an urgent appeal to the community, noting that residents are deeply traumatised by the ongoing violence.
"My appeal is for the community to please come forward with information so that I am able to assist. Everything will remain completely anonymous if you contact me privately," Marr said. "The community is shocked and traumatised by this recent spate of shootings."
