The Democratic Alliance (DA) is urging the police to leave no stone unturned in bringing gunmen responsible for a mass shooting in Philippi East to book.

Eight people were shot in an extortion related killing at a tavern in the Marikana informal settlement on Saturday.

Police have launched a manhunt for the unknown gunmen.

The DA's Benedicta van Minnen said since April 2024, 331 arrests have been made in connection with extortion cases in the province, but only one conviction has been secured.

She said the investigation must be prioritised, adequately resourced, and pursued relentlessly until justice is served.

"This tragedy underscores the urgent need for coordinated action between government, law enforcement, civil society, and community leaders to combat violent crime, stop extortion rackets, and stem the flow of illegal firearms into our communities."
