The family of a missing Ekurhuleni official, Andile Mngwevu, are preparing for the worst as the search for the member of the Ekurhuleni mayoral committee enters the fourth day.

Mngwevu was reported missing on Sunday after the vehicle he was traveling in was swept away by fast-moving floodwaters in the Chokwé region of southern Mozambique on Saturday.

He was part of an official delegation visiting the region when severe flooding occurred.

In a statement, the family of the Ekurhuleni MMC for roads and transport have confirmed they are being kept abreast of search and rescue efforts in Mozambique by the South African government.

The family said that they’ve been informed that a South African rescue mission, deployed to Mozambique, has established contact with one of the five individuals who were travelling in the vehicle with Mngwevu at the time of the incident.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has deployed teams to work with disaster management agencies in Mozambique as part of “Operation Chariot”.

Meanwhile, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi will on Tuesday afternoon visit Mngwevu’s family in Springs to offer his support.
