The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has confirmed that its MMC for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, is missing after being swept away by floods in Mozambique.
The city has established that Mngwevu had travelled to the Chokwè area. It remains unclear exactly where he went missing, but a search and rescue operation is under way.
Mozambique has been experiencing severe downpours, which have resulted in widespread flooding.
The Office of the Mayor in Ekurhuleni said the vehicle Mngwevu was travelling in was washed away by floodwaters, although the exact location of the incident has not yet been confirmed.
South African rescue operators have travelled to Mozambique and are in contact with one of the five people who were travelling in the same vehicle as the MMC.
Mngwevu’s wife also travelled to Mozambique on Tuesday evening.
The national government has been roped in to assist with the search efforts.
