Big risks, high costs: Why you should stay up to date with your car maintenance

Some motorists regularly neglect servicing to save money, leading to spiralling costs in the long term.

This is according to Steve Auto Clinic services advisor, Eugene Schutter.

They opt for the bare minimum by only doing specific checks and changes, not realising that this could lead to damage and higher costs.

Basic car maintenance includes oil, brake, suspension, tyre, and wiper checks.

In addition to the filters, the oil itself should be changed every 15,000 kilometres as its viscosity wears down over time.

“Your oil is the heart of the vehicle. By covering those things, you will prolong your engine’s life,” he said.

Schutter explained that modern vehicles have warning lights for brake issues, but older vehicles require physical checks.

Knocking, bad squeaking, or grinding noises are also clear indicators of brake or suspension issues.

He also encouraged motorists to inspect their tyres regularly, as worn-out tyres can lead to accidents, especially on wet roads.

“[Neglecting this] can cause your car to have a big accident,” he said.

Wiper blades and fluid should also be checked every three to four months.
