The Department of Human Settlements has started building temporary units to house residents of Limpopo and Mpumalanga displaced by flooding.

Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane has provided an update on the damage caused by the floods.

FLOOD WARNING: SA Weather Service forecasts continued heavy rain across Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Gauteng

Over 1,900 houses have been damaged in the deadly Limpopo floods and more 1,800 others in Mpumalanga.

During a media briefing on Wednesday, Simelane said affected residents have been moved from mass care centres - which include community halls and churches - to temporary emergency accommodation in the form of BnBs and lodges.

“The second phase will be the acquisition of temporary residential units. We are procuring 39 for Mbaula area, 73 for Bushbuckridge, five for Blouberg and 13 for Makhado.”

The department is still conducting a verification process to confirm the residential details and identities of flood victims.
