Search for missing Ekurhuleni MMC Andile Mngwevu enters 5th day in Mozambique

Search and rescue efforts to locate a missing City of Ekurhuleni official in Mozambique entered their fifth day on Wednesday .

The MMC for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, was reported missing late on Friday evening after the vehicle he and his friends were travelling in was caught in floodwaters in the Chókwè region in the southern part of the country.

Government officials confirmed on Tuesday that one person survived the incident and is assisting search and rescue personnel with information.

While the window of finding Mngwevu alive edges closer towards closing, the government remains optimistic.

A delegation, led by Gauteng Premier Panyaza visited Mngwevu’s family in Springs, on the East Rand, on Tuesday.

"We remain highly hopeful that we will be in a position to make a breakthrough and get the information that will assist us to understand where everyone is and what happened and what needs to be done so we can come and convey that to the family," Lesufi said.

Lesufi said authorities were working with a survivor who was in the vehicle with Mngwevu and three others when it was swept away.

"The last information that was provided to us was that indeed there was somebody who is believed to be a survivor that they’re communicating with," he said.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation is providing the family with updates.
