Eastern Cape police are expected to focus their attention on the awarding of bail to a primary school teacher who shot and killed two of his colleagues before killing himself on Thursday.

The incident occurred at Ntabankulu Primary School in Zwelitsha.

The school’s former teacher was out on bail for sexual assault charges involving pupils.

Police said he forcibly gained access to the school premises by cutting the fencing before locating three female teachers, whom he began shooting at.

After shooting three of his female colleagues in the kitchen of Ntabankulu Primary School in Zwelitsha, the man turned the gun on himself.

One of the victims, as well as the gunman, were declared dead at the scene, with another succumbing to her injuries a short while later.

The incident occurred around midday.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana: “A former teacher of the school, who was out on bail for sexual assault charges involving pupils, forcibly gained entry to the premises by cutting through the perimeter fence. The suspect proceeded directly to the school kitchen, where he opened fire on three educators. Following this, the suspect shot and killed himself.”

The investigation into the full circumstances of the attack continues.
