Under fire, Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza claims people implicated in the Madlanga commission are driving a smear campaign against him.

Xhakaza held a media briefing in his Germiston offices on Friday to respond to some of the reports surrounding him.

A recent News24 report placed Xhakaza at the scene of the fatal shooting of Dj Bongani Mfihlo and alleged he misled police investigators over the death of the city’s former auditor, Mpho Mafole.

The Ekurhuleni municipality has featured prominently in the Madlanga Commission.

From murder and corruption cover-ups to irregular tenders, the metro has seen it all.

As mayor Doctor Xhakaza has suspended a number of the municipality’s senior officials based on the information from the commission.

“You would know ever since we took a decision to implement consequences,s there’s been a fightback & pushback - largely in the social media. Some of the people we took them to court, and they have changed platforms to continue their smearing.”

Xhakaza says he has no involvement in the deaths of DJ Bongani Mfihlo and Mpho Mafole.
