The Western Cape government said on Wednesday that an assessment was being done to determine the extent of the damage caused by a fire at Paarl Hospital on Tuesday.

Emergency services and hospital staff managed to evacuate three floors of the facility after the blaze tore through a section of the hospital.

Investigations were underway to determine whether the fire was caused by an electric car.

Democratic Alliance (DA) Western Cape Spokesperson on health, Memory Booysen, commended emergency workers and hospital staff for ensuring patients were relocated safely.

“While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the professionalism and preparedness of healthcare workers and emergency responders prevented what could have been a far more serious situation,” Booysen said.
