The Gauteng government committed to support the family of the late Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu.

In a statement on Tuesday night, his family confirmed that Mngwevu’s body was recovered in Mozambique, ending an extensive search for the politician that began more than a week ago.

The 40-year-old went missing after the car he was travelling in with friends was swept away by floods in the Chokwé region.

In their statement, Mngwevu’s family expressed devastation at the grim discovery of his body.

Since then, there has been an outpouring of messages of sympathy and support.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s Spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, said government was deeply saddened by the news but would offer support to the family.

“We will be supporting the families during this difficult time and once again we convey our deepest condolences to the families of the MMC together with the persons he was with in the vehicle, whose identities are yet to be confirmed.”

Last Monday, government officials confirmed that one person had survived the incident and was assisting in search and rescue efforts.

Mngwevu’s family said arrangements for repatriation and a funeral would be communicated in due course as they came to terms with their loss.
