Rand Water said the explosion of one of its motors at the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant, has left some of its systems in the south of Gauteng with low water pressure and outages.

Following the explosion on Tuesday, the utility said an entire engine room was shut down but pumping has since resumed partially.

The system lost 1,800 megalitres of water per day and so far, 1,400 has been recovered.

Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo explained: “The technical teams are working tirelessly to recover the balance. The disruption is expected to affect reservoirs within the Palmiet, Eikenhoff and Mapleton systems. And some areas may experience low water pressure or temporary water outages.”
