Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero is in the firing line again, as he’s set to face a motion of no confidence on Thursday.

The latest attempt to remove him from office was initiated by Al Jama-ah and backed by other minority parties.

They allege that Morero has failed to improve service delivery and has not adequately consulted coalition partners before making key decisions.

Last year, Morero survived a Democratic Alliance (DA)-sponsored no-confidence vote, while another Al Jama-ah motion was withdrawn just before voting.

There is growing pressure, including from within the African National Congress (ANC), for Morero to step down as Johannesburg mayor.

This follows the fact that Morero is no longer the party’s leader in the city, with some ANC factions calling for his successor, Loyiso Masuku, to take over the mayoral position.

On Tuesday, the multi-party coalition met, during which most parties called on the ANC to recall Morero from office.

In addition, the ANC’s Gauteng and national leadership have begun discussions to determine whether he should be recalled.

However, with local government elections approaching, there are concerns that a shift in leadership could set the party back.

Morero’s motion of no confidence is set to be debated in the city council.
