Eleven people have died, and eight others are injured in a crash involving a truck and a taxi in the Isipingo area, south of Durban, on Thursday.

Traffic on the highway was brought to a standstill as emergency services worked at the scene.

Preliminary reports suggested that the truck ploughed into a minibus taxi.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the vehicles collided and left the roadway.

"A taxi fully loaded and a truck had collided. They then left the roadway with the truck pinning the taxi against a tree. Multiple casualties were entrapped, and immediately, the eThekwini Fire Department started working to cut them free," Jamieson said.

Jamieson added that several people died at the scene.

"Approximately eight others have sustained various injuries, mostly critical," he said.
