The National Association of School Governing Bodies has called on parents to urgently seek alternative transport for learners affected by the ongoing crackdown on scholar transport operators.

More than 100 scholar vehicles have been impounded since the operation started, following a fatal scholar transport crash in Vanderbijilpark that claimed the lives of 14 learners.

The body’s general secretary, Motakanyane Motakanyane, said all schools must now develop scholar transport policies.

“We are disappointed by the Department of Education because the Department of Education has got the resources. It's the human resources, physical resources, and financial resources. Each and every school in South Africa has got a person called IDSO [Institutional Development and Support Official]. So, one of, when this IDSO is now checking on schools, one of the areas that he must check on is this policy, the school transport policy.

“Because we don't want to see them jumping when an accident occurs. Then it becomes an event, and we start making noise and all those things.”
