The Tshwane Municipality said it had finally submitted an application to National Treasury to blacklist controversial businessman Edwin Sodi and his affiliated businesses.
Through the application, the municipality wants Sodi’s companies to be barred from receiving any government contracts.
In 2019, a consortium led by Sodi was awarded a R250 million contract to upgrade the dysfunctional Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant.
However, the municipality was forced to cancel the contract after the consortium abandoned the site with much of the work still incomplete.
In a statement, the municipality said the delay in submitting its blacklisting application was to ensure the process was handled correctly.
National Treasury has previously rejected the Tshwane Municipality’s applications to blacklist Sodi and his affiliated companies after finding faults in the submissions.
The latest move has received unanimous support from political parties in Tshwane.
DA Tshwane caucus leader Cilliers Brink welcomed the development.
“I have this to say for the executive mayor, she certainly responds to pressure and we will continue to pressure her in the interest of good governance.”
Meanwhile, ActionSA said critics should remember that successive governments in Tshwane have previously failed to take this step.
