Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has warned South Africa to be vigilant against possible United States (US) interference in the upcoming local government elections.
Malema made the remarks while delivering his opening address at the party’s second plenum in Boksburg on Friday.
He said it has become clear that the Donald Trump administration has vested interests in South Africa, which he believes could undermine the country’s sovereignty.
Malema added that Pretoria must take all necessary steps to ensure it remains free from US influence.
“It is, therefore, important be aware of the possibility of US interference in our elections. Be it through funding our ideological opponents, attempting to fracture our democracy using tribal lines or actively attempting to pursue the arrest of our leaders”
He said South Africa must prepare for US aggression.
“This election is not one that will be purely domestic. Especially considering the propaganda deployed against South Africa of a non-existent white genocide. We must begin to prepare ourselves for the worst, as the USA is determined to punish South Africa for standing up against apartheid Israel.”
